During this show we’ll cover a number of asset classes that are often ignored by investors & financial advisors. They simply refer to them as Alternative Investments, as if they were less important than stocks & bonds. Stock prices have been rising for more than 6 years, and bonds have been in a bull market for 35 years. What happens to your portfolio if both those asset classes decline for several years? Are you prepared?

       Which asset classes are included in Alternative Investments? Are these asset classes riskier or less liquid? Are they only available to accredited investors? If not – why don’t financial advisors recommend them for all investor portfolios? So why do investors spend so much time watching and tracking the equity market and so little time tracking the bond market? On the other hand, if most Financial Advisors recommend having 60-80% of a portfolio in equities and the remainder in bonds & cash … how can more money be invested in bonds than in equities?

       As we heard on a recent show, our portfolios can be negatively affected by one of our publicly traded investments filing for bankruptcy. Is that the only time you have to worry about bankruptcy? Let’s not forget about investments in private companies, landlords dealing with tenant bankruptcy, private mortgage lenders, and business owners who have clients file bankruptcy. What about your bank CD’s if the FDIC filed for bankruptcy? Municipal bonds if a city files bankruptcy? Or what about Treasury Bills or other sovereign debt if that country files bankruptcy?!

Afford the Good Life

      The Wealth DNA radio show is dedicated to helping you increase your wealth, as well as educating savers & investors. One of the basic questions we should ask ourselves periodically: Why do I Invest? Although each of us may have slightly different reasons, there appear to be 2 common responses.
      1. To continue to afford the good life after I stop working, and
      2. I have to !
Even if we’re frugal and avid savers, putting our savings into a bank account, safe or in a tin can buried underground, we won’t be increasing our net worth. By saving AND investing we’re able to build wealth much faster. Early in our career savings will be the most important contributor, and as our nest egg grows, our investing and compounding can add far more to our net worth than our savings.
 
       This all sounds so logical, when you’re in the group well on their way to becoming wealthy, and having the good life throughout their lives. For those in the rat race group struggling to accumulate enough each month to make their monthly payments, this good life is merely a theoretical discussion. What are the key differences between these 2 groups? Is it their habits we discussed recently? Could it be their level of Financial Literacy? Is it their mindset? Education level? Or is it their employer who decides their fate as to which group they are destined for?
 
       Our special guest Richard Melancon will shed some light on the topic, help answer these questions, and provide some tips to avoid bankruptcy and exit the rat race. Who knows – he may even share some strategies for saving on taxes. Richard Melancon is a CPA, Business Consultant,  Professional Speaker & Author of 3 books. We’ll be focusing on his first book: You Can Afford the Good Life. His other books focus on helping companies & managers to implement best practices used by effective businesses.

     The Wealth DNA Radio Show is dedicated to helping you increase your wealth, as well as educating savers & investors. During this show our returning guest Michael Orr will help educate us on a major asset class, which affects each of us whether we invest in residential real estate, we own a home, or we rent. I’ve said before that once housing prices start to rise rapidly, we can expect housing to be kicked out of the US CPI just like food & energy. Although as far as I know, we don’t have a single listener who can avoid eating, consuming energy, and living somewhere !
 
       It’s been a full 3 years since we had Michael Orr on the show, and I forget that most listeners don’t have regular access to the information he provides in the Cromford Report and as Director of the Real Estate Center Theory & Practice at the WP Carey School of Business at Arizona State University (ASU). So you may not know that his prediction on the housing market bottom, the rapid rise, and the plateau in prices starting late in 2013 happened just as he stated. I can assure you, he’s not like one of the talking heads just sharing his opinion … he bases his predictions on facts and trends. And no one has better data on housing than he does.  Our last interview with Michael was in 2012 discussing When will Housing Prices Rise?  You may want to listen to the show’s Archive in advance of this follow up interview.
